What is SALT?
SALT stands for:
Student
Action
Leadership
Team
This is going to be a HUGE semester for SALT. I (Jared) am gone, so we need a strong SALT group to help carry the load. We have changed some of the application and have kept some the same. If you are seriously considering applying for the SALT team read every word of this application, even if you have been on it before. We added parts about accountability and calling others out. You don’t want to be surprised later; this is a semester-long commitment. Being on the SALT Team is not a decision you make on a whim. You will be selected to making the SALT team based upon your spiritual life to this point and not based upon a “Camp High”.
Explanation for SALT: Get out a Bible and read Luke 14: 33-35.
“33In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple. 34 "Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? 35It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out. "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."
Now read Matthew 5: 13-16.
Salt and Light 13 "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.14 "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.
The time is now to live like this. God loves us, and in response we want to live like this. We need to forgive. We need to not judge. We need to be selfless. We need each other…
The SALT team is a discipleship group.
Discipleship means learning how to become one who embraces and assists in the spreading the teachings of Jesus.
We want to abandon everything for Christ, but that does not happen without being trained up in what it means to follow Christ when real life happens. I want to be working towards a real life faith. The decisions to let go of pride and selfishness, and to adopt a spirit of love. To unashamedly follow Christ in all areas of our lives, at all times. These things do not happen instantly when you decide to become a Christ-follower, they happen with practice. They happen in community.
The goal is to lift each other up as a like-minded community of Christ followers, who desire to dwell in the presence of the Lord. Desiring to walk towards Christ together as a united group of believers in the same community. We are not trying to be perfect, but in grace we want to reflect God’s love at all times.
Let it be stated from the beginning that to join this team you have to be transparent. The success of the entire team rides on each individual’s ability to be honest with themselves before God and each other. The expression of your honest thoughts, feelings, frustrations, joys, opinions and even your struggles will build the foundation for this group. If you want to be a student leader, you need to be transparent.
SALT Living Standards:
1) We find our identity in Christ, and in Christ alone (read Romans 5:9-11).
2) Be a follower of The Way (read 1 Timothy 4:12).
We love and value all human beings equally.
We use our words to build others up.
We strive to put others’ needs above our own.
We look to be a servant in all situations.
We recognize our calling to be stewards of God’s creation.
3) Out of my ever-growing love for God I commit to strengthening my relationship with God through devotions, Bible study, and prayer. I understand that by striving to know God, I am opening the door that allows God to direct my path. I know that by joining the SALT team I am willingly committing to accountability in all areas of my life.
4) I commit to not drink alcohol and/or do drugs. (read Ephesians 5:18; Romans 14:21).
5) I commit to strive for sexual purity. I understand the high purity standards set by Christ and commit to having those standards be discussed at the forefront of any potential physical relationship. (read 1 Corinthians 6:18; 1 Peter 1:13-16).
6) If I am currently struggling with any of these requirements I will discuss them with a youth staff immediately. SALT members humbly call others out and are humble when called out for actions that are not reflecting of the love God has for us. If you notice something that violates these rules in someone else (1) approach them one-on-one ASAP. Hopefully this will end the problem and they will receive you warmly. (2) If they do not receive you well, bring one other SALT member. (3) If they still do not receive that well, involve a youth staff, Jared or Julie. (read Matthew 18:15-17, 7:3-5).
SALT Requirements:
Joining this team is semester long commitment to be a leader in the SDFC youth group. To be a leader you need to live a life above reproach (read 1 Tim 3:1-13 carefully).
Attend all the SALT meetings that you can. I need you to be at these. This means talking with your parents about the schedule in advance. We will be having these Sunday after church.
Attend Tuesday night youth group regularly. SALT members are the kind of students who choose youth group over other activities. As a SALT Team, take the leadership of inviting friends, leading small groups, being honest, doing announcements, and helping pull-off activities.
Attend youth group trips – mandatory attendance to either the Fall Service Trip (probably November 21st-24th) or signing up for NYC (July 3rd-10th) and/or Haiti (dates not set, July 2011). Much of what we are doing as a youth group will be focused around these trips. We would love for you to commit to fundraising, leading, recruiting, and building these trips into what they need to be.
Attend a Sunday morning Christian church service for worship and teaching on a regular basis. We highly recommend attending First Church, it is really good right now : )
Be in an accountability group, book study, or bible study of your choosing.
